Background

Born Mariel Margaret Hamm in Selma, Alabama, she joined the United States women’s national team at 15, the youngest player ever called up to the squad.

Career

She won NCAA titles with North Carolina before helping the US win the inaugural Women’s World Cup in 1991 and the iconic 1999 final at the Rose Bowl. She played professionally for the Washington Freedom in the WUSA before retiring in 2004.

Style of play

A two-footed forward with sprint speed and aggressive runs at defenders, Hamm finished from both wide and central positions and led the line for the US for over a decade.
