Born in Dallas, Texas, Johnson attended Baylor University and emerged on the senior circuit in the late 1980s.
Career
At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics he became the first man to win both the 200m and 400m at the same Games, smashing the 200m world record. He won 400m gold again at Sydney 2000 and was undefeated over 400m in major finals for nearly a decade.

Johnson was known for an unusually upright running posture and short stride compared with other sprinters. He combined consistent rhythm with strong finishing in the closing 100m.
