Background

Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and competing for Sweden, Ulrich Salchow began competitive skating in the 1890s and won his first World title in 1901.

Career

He won ten World Championships between 1901 and 1911 and became the inaugural Olympic figure skating champion in London in 1908. He retired from competition shortly after the 1913 Worlds.

Style of play

Salchow combined classical posture with the new athletic jumps emerging in his era. His signature jump, taking off from the back inside edge with a free leg swing, remains a base element of competitive routines.
