A 1995 Japanese role-playing game by Square for the Super Nintendo, in which a young inventor and his friends travel through eras to prevent a planetary catastrophe.
Origin
Developed by a team dubbed the “Dream Project,” including Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii, and artist Akira Toriyama, Chrono Trigger combined talent from across Square and Enix. Its time-travel premise lets the party visit prehistory, the medieval era, the post-apocalyptic future, and more.
Gameplay
Chrono Trigger has no random battles — enemies are visible on the field. Multi-character “Techs” let party members combine abilities, and the game’s New Game Plus and multiple endings encouraged replay.
Legacy
Chrono Trigger is regularly cited as one of the greatest video games ever made. Its narrative, music by Yasunori Mitsuda, and tight design have aged exceptionally well across multiple ports.
