Directed by Jenova Chen, Journey strips communication down to musical chirps. Players cannot speak to or identify the strangers who briefly accompany them, building emotional connection through wordless cooperation.
Visuals
Soft sand, glowing tapestries, and Vance Joy-like score by Austin Wintory create a meditative pilgrimage. Wintory’s music received the first Grammy nomination for a video game score.
Legacy
Journey won numerous Game of the Year awards in 2012 and is often cited as evidence that games can be art. Thatgamecompany would go on to create Sky: Children of the Light using similar online multiplayer principles.
