A 2008 motion-controlled music game by Nintendo in which up to four players use the Wii Remote to mime instruments and play covers of familiar songs.
Concept
Producer Shigeru Miyamoto designed Wii Music as an accessible jam session. Sixty-six instruments are mapped to combinations of Wii Remote and Nunchuk motion gestures.
Gameplay
Players choose from public-domain songs, anime themes, and Nintendo tracks, then perform with three AI or human bandmates. A mini-game lets the player conduct virtual orchestras with the Wii Remote.
Legacy
Although divisive on launch, Wii Music sold over three million copies and demonstrated Nintendo’s experimental side. The franchise’s sole sequel, the multiplayer-focused Nintendo Switch Sports, focused exclusively on sports rather than music.
