A 1992 shooter by id Software in which Allied spy B.J. Blazkowicz escapes the Nazi prison of Castle Wolfenstein, defining the first-person shooter genre for a generation.
Origin
Designed by John Carmack, John Romero, and Tom Hall, Wolfenstein 3D was a spiritual successor to the 1981 stealth game Castle Wolfenstein. Apogee distributed it as shareware, with the first episode free.
Gameplay
Players navigate maze-like floors filled with Nazi guards, dogs, and SS troops. The game introduced wide audiences to texture-mapped 3D corridors and rapid first-person gunplay.
Legacy
Wolfenstein 3D launched the modern first-person shooter and inspired Doom and Quake. The franchise was rebooted in 2009 and again with 2014’s Wolfenstein: The New Order, expanding the alt-history Nazi-occupied premise into a long-running modern series.
