A 1987 Nintendo Entertainment System action RPG sequel to The Legend of Zelda, in which Link awakens Princess Zelda by collecting crystals from six guarded palaces.
Concept
Directed by Shigeru Miyamoto, Zelda II departed from the top-down structure of the original. Overworld travel is shown from a map, while battles and dungeons play out in side-scrolling action.
Gameplay
Link gains experience points by defeating enemies and spends them to level up sword strike, magic, and life. Side-scrolling combat introduced thrust and downward stab moves that returned in later Zelda games.
Legacy
Zelda II’s divergence from the formula proved divisive, and later entries reverted to top-down and 3D adventure. Still, the down-thrust attack returned in Link’s Awakening and A Link Between Worlds, and the experience-point model influenced later JRPGs.
