New Line Cinema released I Am Sam in December 2001. Jessie Nelson co-wrote the screenplay with Kristine Johnson and directed. Sean Penn starred as Sam Dawson, with Dakota Fanning as his daughter Lucy and Michelle Pfeiffer as a high-powered lawyer who agrees to represent him pro bono.
Story
Starbucks employee Sam Dawson, who has an intellectual disability and is a single father, loses custody of his seven-year-old daughter Lucy after a misunderstanding with police. He persuades the cold corporate attorney Rita Harrison to take his case and through their work together both characters change.
Reception
I Am Sam earned mixed reviews but a strong box office, grossing over 97 million dollars worldwide. Sean Penn received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. The soundtrack album, of Beatles songs covered by contemporary artists, became a multi-platinum success.
