The Box

Filter:

A 2009 American psychological science fiction thriller written and directed by Richard Kelly about a 1970s Virginia couple who receive a wooden box that promises a million dollars in exchange for a stranger's death.

Production

Warner Bros. released The Box in November 2009. Richard Kelly adapted Richard Matheson’s 1970 short story Button, Button. James Marsden and Cameron Diaz played the suburban Virginia couple Arthur and Norma Lewis, with Frank Langella as the burned, mostly faceless emissary Arlington Steward.

Story

On a December morning in 1976, Norma Lewis is brought a small wooden box by a disfigured stranger. He offers one million dollars in cash if she presses the box’s button, with the caveat that pressing it will cause the death of someone she does not know. The Lewises’ decision pulls them into a wider, stranger plot.

Reception

The Box opened to mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office, but it has been reassessed in subsequent years as a distinctive late-2000s work by Richard Kelly. Critics have particularly highlighted the film’s atmosphere, its NASA-inflected period detail, and its commitment to a slow, ambiguous tone.
