A 2001 New Zealand-American fantasy epic about a hobbit who inherits a dangerous magical ring and joins a quest to destroy it in the fires of its making.
Production
Peter Jackson directed the first chapter of an adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s 1954 novel, the opening of a trilogy shot back-to-back in New Zealand from 1999 to 2000. New Line Cinema staked roughly $93 million on this film alone.
Reception
The film opened in December 2001, earned around $898 million worldwide, and won four Academy Awards from 13 nominations. Critical reception was almost uniformly positive.
Legacy
The trilogy is widely credited with reinventing the fantasy epic as a viable mainstream genre and with cementing New Zealand’s standing as a production destination. The film’s visual-effects subsidiary Weta Digital became a global leader in feature animation.
