A 2003 New Zealand-American fantasy epic concluding the quest as the armies of the West confront Sauron while the ring approaches Mount Doom.
Production
Peter Jackson directed the final film of the trilogy, with extensive Wellington shooting through 2003 to complete elements unfinished from the original 2000 back-to-back schedule. Composer Howard Shore extended the trilogy’s leitmotif system to nearly four hours of original orchestral and choral music.
Reception
The film opened in December 2003, earned around $1.16 billion worldwide, and swept all 11 Academy Awards for which it was nominated, the only fantasy film to win Best Picture.
Legacy
The Oscar sweep tied Ben-Hur and Titanic and signaled mainstream acceptance of large-scale fantasy as awards material. The extended-edition cut, released later on home video, exceeds four hours.
