A 2002 New Zealand-American fantasy epic following the splintered fellowship as armies of Saruman threaten the kingdom of Rohan and the journey east continues.
Production
Peter Jackson directed the second installment from the back-to-back shoot completed in 2000, with extensive pickup photography in 2002. The siege of Helm’s Deep took four months of night shooting at the Hayfield set near Wellington. The character Gollum, performed by Andy Serkis, was rendered through then-novel motion-capture techniques by Weta Digital.
Reception
The film opened in December 2002 and earned around $948 million worldwide, exceeding its predecessor. It received six Academy Award nominations and won two.
Legacy
Gollum’s performance marked a turning point for motion-capture acting and established Weta Digital as a leader in performance-driven animation. The film’s sustained battle sequence is routinely cited as a high mark of fantasy filmmaking.
