The Matrix

Filter:

A 1999 American science fiction film about a hacker who learns that his reality is a computer simulation built to harvest energy from sedated human bodies.

Production

Lana and Lilly Wachowski wrote and directed for Warner Bros. on a $63 million budget. Visual effects supervisor John Gaeta and the production used Australian crews to develop “bullet time,” a then-novel camera array that allowed the apparent freezing and orbiting of action moments.

Reception

The film opened in March 1999, earned around $467 million worldwide, and swept all four of its Academy Award nominations. Its black-coated, sunglassed style swept advertising and fashion through the early 2000s.

Legacy

Bullet time and the film’s wire-fu choreography influenced a decade of action cinema. The Matrix launched a four-film franchise that ran into 2021, anchored a foundational philosophical-science-fiction film canon, and added vocabulary like “red pill” to general English.
