Production
Pathe and Granada Productions released The Queen in September 2006. Peter Morgan wrote the screenplay, the first of his many works about Elizabeth II and the Blair government. Helen Mirren played the queen and Michael Sheen reprised his Tony Blair from The Deal.
Plot
The film opens with the May 1997 election that brought Blair to power. After Princess Diana dies in Paris that August, the royal family retreats to Balmoral while public mourning erupts in London. Blair tries to persuade the queen to address the nation.
Reception
The Queen received six Academy Award nominations, with Mirren winning Best Actress. Critics praised the film’s understated tone and its empathetic, dual portrait of two leaders confronting a sudden shift in the relationship between the monarchy and its public.
