The Shawshank Redemption

Filter:

A 1994 American prison drama about a wrongfully convicted banker who endures two decades inside a Maine penitentiary while quietly engineering an escape.

Production

Frank Darabont wrote and directed the film, adapting Stephen King’s 1982 novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. Castle Rock Entertainment financed at $25 million, with location work at the closed Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman led the cast.

Reception

The film opened in September 1994 and earned only around $28 million on first release, often blamed on its awkward title. Seven Academy Award nominations and a heavy television rotation reversed that initial reception.

Legacy

The film has held the top position on the IMDb user-voted Top 250 chart for most of its existence. The friendship between Andy Dufresne and Red is widely cited as a model of restrained dramatic narration.
