The Stuff

Filter:

A 1985 American satirical horror film written and directed by Larry Cohen about a creamy, sugar-free dessert that turns out to be a parasitic organism consuming its consumers.

Production

New World Pictures released The Stuff in June 1985. Larry Cohen wrote and directed the film as a satire of consumer culture and the dieting fads of the early Reagan years. The cast was led by Michael Moriarty as the industrial saboteur David Rutherford and Garrett Morris as a candy magnate.

Story

After miners notice a strange white substance bubbling out of the ground, it is marketed as The Stuff, a low-calorie ice cream that quickly displaces ordinary desserts. Rival manufacturers hire Rutherford to investigate, and he discovers that the addictive product is converting its eaters from the inside out.

Reception

The Stuff received limited theatrical attention but has been embraced as a cult favorite in subsequent decades. Critics have read the film as one of the sharpest American horror satires of the mid-1980s, alongside They Live, anticipating broader anxieties about advertising and product safety.
