The Witch

Filter:

A 2015 American historical horror film written and directed by Robert Eggers about a Puritan family exiled from a New England colony in 1630 and tormented by supernatural forces.

Production

A24 acquired The Witch out of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and released it in February 2016. Robert Eggers wrote and directed his debut feature, drawing dialogue from period diaries and court records and shooting it with natural and candlelight sources on remote land in Ontario.

Story

Banished from a Massachusetts plantation over a religious dispute, an English family of seven settles on the edge of a forbidding wood. After their infant son disappears during a game with the eldest daughter Thomasin, the family fractures along lines of accusation, mistrust, and witchcraft.

Reception

The Witch helped establish A24 as a leading distributor of art-horror in the late 2010s, alongside films like Hereditary and The Lighthouse. Anya Taylor-Joy’s lead performance launched her career, and Robert Eggers became known for his period-precise approach to genre filmmaking.
