Titanic

Filter:

A 1997 American romantic disaster film about a love affair between a steerage artist and a first-class passenger aboard the doomed 1912 ocean liner.

Production

James Cameron wrote and directed the Paramount and 20th Century Fox co-production, building a near-full-scale Titanic replica at a new studio in Rosarito, Mexico. The $200 million budget made it the most expensive film ever produced at the time, repeatedly pushing back its release.

Reception

The film opened in December 1997 and earned around $2.26 billion on initial release, the first film to cross $1 billion and the highest-grossing film for 12 years. It won 11 Academy Awards, tying Ben-Hur for the record.

Legacy

The film made Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet international stars, set new benchmarks for technical production scale, and remains one of the most theatrically rewatched films of the 1990s.
