What lawyers do

Lawyers research statutes and case law, draft contracts and briefs, negotiate settlements, and argue cases in court. They counsel clients on rights and obligations, structure transactions, and represent individuals, businesses, or the government depending on practice area.

Training path

US lawyers complete a bachelor’s degree, three years of law school leading to a Juris Doctor, and pass a state bar examination. Most also pass a character and fitness review and complete continuing legal education throughout their careers.

Practice areas

Common practice areas include corporate, criminal, family, immigration, intellectual property, real estate, tax, labor and employment, environmental, and personal injury law. Many lawyers specialize after a few years of general practice.
