Training path
US lawyers complete a bachelor’s degree, three years of law school leading to a Juris Doctor, and pass a state bar examination. Most also pass a character and fitness review and complete continuing legal education throughout their careers.
Practice areas
Common practice areas include corporate, criminal, family, immigration, intellectual property, real estate, tax, labor and employment, environmental, and personal injury law. Many lawyers specialize after a few years of general practice.
