A physician who interprets medical images to diagnose disease and guides image-based procedures.
What radiologists do
Radiologists read x-rays, CT, MRI, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine studies, producing reports that guide diagnosis and treatment. Interventional radiologists also perform minimally invasive procedures such as biopsies, drain placements, and vascular interventions guided by imaging.
Training path
Diagnostic radiology in the US requires a four-year medical degree, an internship year, and a four-year radiology residency. Fellowship training in neuroradiology, musculoskeletal, body imaging, breast, pediatric, or interventional radiology adds one to two years.
Modalities
Radiologists work with plain film x-ray, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, mammography, fluoroscopy, and nuclear medicine including PET scans.
