Most US roofers learn on the job as helpers, advancing as they master cutting, fastening, and safety techniques. Some complete a three-year apprenticeship through the Roofers union, with classroom hours on materials and OSHA standards.

Specializations

Specializations include steep-slope residential shingle work, low-slope commercial built-up and single-ply membranes, slate and tile restoration, metal standing-seam, and green roof installation with vegetation.
