What carpenters do

Carpenters frame walls, install joists and rafters, hang doors and windows, build cabinetry and trim, and construct concrete forms. Rough carpenters focus on structural framing while finish carpenters handle visible woodwork such as molding, stairs, and built-ins.

Training path

Most US carpenters learn through a three- to four-year apprenticeship combining paid work with classroom instruction in math, blueprint reading, and building codes. Others learn informally as helpers or graduate from technical college programs.

Settings

Carpenters work in residential new construction, commercial framing, remodeling, custom millwork shops, concrete formwork, theatrical set construction, and shipbuilding. Many become contractors and run their own crews.
