What physiotherapists do
Physiotherapists evaluate musculoskeletal and neurological function, design rehabilitation programs, and apply hands-on techniques, exercise, and modalities to restore strength, mobility, and balance. They commonly treat post-surgical patients, stroke survivors, athletes, and people with chronic pain.
Training path
US physical therapists must hold a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, a three-year clinical doctorate. After graduation, they pass the National Physical Therapy Examination for state licensure. Optional residencies and board certifications cover orthopedics, neurology, sports, and other specialties.
Settings
Physiotherapists work in outpatient orthopedic clinics, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, schools, sports teams, and home health agencies. Many also operate cash-based clinics focused on wellness and performance.
