A surgeon who performs reconstructive and cosmetic procedures to restore function and refine appearance.
What plastic surgeons do
Plastic surgeons reconstruct tissue lost to trauma, cancer, or congenital defect, and perform cosmetic procedures such as rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, and facelift. They reattach severed limbs, build new breasts after mastectomy, and repair cleft lip and palate.
Training path
US plastic surgery requires medical school followed by either a six-year integrated residency or a general surgery residency plus a three-year plastic surgery fellowship. Hand and craniofacial fellowships add one more year.
Subspecialties
Subfields include craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, burn reconstruction, breast reconstruction, gender-affirming surgery, and aesthetic surgery focused entirely on cosmetic procedures.
