Paramedic

Filter:

An advanced prehospital clinician who delivers emergency medical care and transport before patients reach the hospital.

What paramedics do

Paramedics respond to medical emergencies, assess patients, administer medications, perform advanced airway and cardiac interventions, and transport patients to definitive care. They function under medical control protocols and frequently lead the prehospital phase of trauma, cardiac arrest, and stroke care.

Training path

US paramedics complete an accredited paramedic program lasting one to two years after EMT certification. State licensure requires the National Registry exam. Many work as EMTs first, gaining field experience before paramedic school.

Settings

Paramedics work for fire-based EMS, hospital-based services, private ambulance companies, helicopter and fixed-wing transport, industrial sites, military, and emergency departments as community paramedics or technicians.
