Most US firefighters complete a fire academy lasting four to six months and earn EMT or paramedic certification. They train on hose work, ventilation, search and rescue, ladders, and SCBA use. Some career firefighters also hold associate or bachelor’s degrees in fire science.
Settings
Firefighters work for municipal departments, county fire districts, federal wildland firefighting agencies including the Forest Service and BLM, airport rescue services, military bases, and industrial fire brigades at refineries and chemical plants.
