What foresters do
Foresters inventory timber stands, design harvests, plan reforestation, manage wildfire risk, monitor wildlife habitat, and steward public and private forests. They also write management plans, supervise logging, and balance ecological, economic, and recreational values.
Training path
Most US foresters hold a bachelor’s degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters accredited program. Many earn the Certified Forester credential and pursue continuing education in fire, GIS, and ecosystem services.
Settings
Foresters work for the US Forest Service, state forestry agencies, timber companies, paper and pulp producers, conservation organizations including The Nature Conservancy, and private consulting firms serving landowners.
