What park rangers do
Park rangers lead tours and educational programs, manage visitor centers, patrol trails and campgrounds, enforce park regulations, support search and rescue, and protect natural and cultural resources from damage and overuse.
Training path
Most US park rangers hold a bachelor’s degree in natural resources, biology, history, or recreation. Many start as seasonal rangers and apply to permanent positions over years. Law enforcement rangers complete a federal law enforcement training program.
Settings
Park rangers work for the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, US Fish and Wildlife Service, state park systems, county and regional parks, and private conservation reserves.
