A primary eye-care provider who examines vision, prescribes corrective lenses, and detects ocular and systemic disease.
What optometrists do
Optometrists perform eye examinations, measure refractive error, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, and screen for glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. They co-manage many ocular conditions with ophthalmologists and refer for surgery when needed.
Training path
US optometrists complete a bachelor’s degree and a four-year Doctor of Optometry program. State licensure follows national and state board examinations. Some optometrists complete a one-year residency in primary care, ocular disease, or pediatrics.
Scope of practice
Scope varies by state but generally includes prescribing topical medications, treating common eye infections, removing superficial foreign bodies, and managing dry eye, allergies, and post-operative care.
