A clinician who diagnoses and manages hearing loss, balance disorders, and tinnitus across the lifespan.
What audiologists do
Audiologists test hearing and balance, fit and program hearing aids, manage cochlear implant patients, and treat tinnitus and vertigo. They evaluate newborns and children in school screening programs and counsel adults on hearing protection and communication strategies.
Training path
US audiologists complete a four-year Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program following a bachelor’s degree, plus a clinical externship. State licensure requires passing the Praxis examination in audiology.
Settings
Audiologists practice in private clinics, ENT offices, hospitals, schools, veterans hospitals, and hearing aid dispensaries. Pediatric audiologists focus on early identification and intervention for childhood hearing loss.
