What agronomists do

Agronomists scout fields, test soil, recommend seed varieties and fertilizer plans, monitor pests and diseases, and design rotations. They support farmer decisions with yield data, weather analysis, and emerging research on cover crops and conservation practices.

Training path

Most US agronomists hold a bachelor’s degree in agronomy, crop science, or soil science from a land-grant university. The Certified Crop Adviser designation from the American Society of Agronomy is the leading industry credential. Many earn master’s degrees in specialty areas.

Settings

Agronomists work for seed and chemical companies such as Bayer and Corteva, agricultural cooperatives, independent crop advising businesses, university extension services, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and conservation nonprofits.
