What auto mechanics do

Auto mechanics inspect vehicles, diagnose engine, transmission, and electronic faults, and replace worn parts. They perform oil changes, brake jobs, suspension work, alignments, climate control service, and increasingly diagnose hybrid and electric vehicle systems.

Training path

Most US auto mechanics attend a one- to two-year technical school program followed by on-the-job experience. ASE certifications in eight specialty areas serve as the industry standard. Many manufacturers run dealership training for brand-specific systems.

Mechanics work at independent repair shops, franchised dealerships, tire and muffler chains, fleet maintenance garages, body shops, and specialty performance and restoration shops.
