Actor

Filter:

A performer who portrays characters in theater, film, television, voice work, and commercials.

What actors do

Actors audition for parts, learn scripts, develop characters, rehearse with directors and fellow performers, and perform in productions ranging from regional theater to feature films and streaming series. Many also do voice work, commercials, and corporate training.

Training path

Many US actors attend drama schools, conservatories such as Juilliard or NYU Tisch, or bachelor of fine arts programs. Others learn through community theater, scene study, audition classes, and on-set experience. Union membership in SAG-AFTRA and Actors Equity governs much of the professional landscape.

Settings

Actors work in regional theaters, Broadway and West End productions, film and streaming productions, daytime and prime-time television, voice acting for animation and games, commercials, and theme park live shows.
