A licensed healthcare professional who provides direct patient care, administers treatments, and coordinates with physicians and families.
What nurses do
Registered nurses assess patient conditions, administer medications and treatments, document care, and educate patients on managing their health. They serve as the primary point of contact between patients, families, and the broader medical team during hospital stays and clinic visits.
Training path
Most US registered nurses earn either an associate degree in nursing or a bachelor of science in nursing, then pass the NCLEX-RN licensing examination. State licensure is required, and many employers prefer or require a BSN for advancement.
Specialties
Nurses can specialize in critical care, oncology, pediatrics, emergency, surgical, psychiatric, and many other fields. Advanced practice roles such as nurse practitioner or certified registered nurse anesthetist require a master’s or doctoral degree.
