PROFESSIONS

Midwife

Filter:

A trained clinician who supports women through pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum recovery.

What midwives do

Midwives manage low-risk pregnancies, attend labor and delivery, support breastfeeding, and provide routine gynecological care. Certified nurse-midwives in the US can prescribe medications and care for newborns in the first month of life, partnering with physicians for higher-risk cases.

Training path

Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses with a graduate degree in midwifery and national certification. Certified professional midwives complete direct-entry training focused on out-of-hospital birth and pass a separate national examination.

Settings

Midwives attend births in hospitals, freestanding birth centers, and homes. They also staff family planning clinics, prenatal practices, and global health programs, often in collaboration with obstetricians.
