An engineer who designs and maintains the propulsion, power, and mechanical systems of ships and offshore structures.
What marine engineers do
Marine engineers design and integrate the engines, generators, pumps, piping, HVAC, and steering systems of ships and offshore platforms. They support new construction at shipyards, optimize fuel efficiency, plan maintenance, and respond to mechanical problems at sea.
Training path
US marine engineers often graduate from maritime academies such as Kings Point, Massachusetts Maritime, and SUNY Maritime, earning bachelor’s degrees and US Coast Guard licenses as marine engineers. Others train through mechanical engineering programs and join shipyards.
Industries
Marine engineers work for shipyards and shipbuilders, offshore oil and gas operators, commercial shipping companies, the US Navy and Coast Guard, classification societies such as ABS and DNV, and naval architecture and design firms.
