What civil engineers do
Civil engineers design highways, bridges, dams, airports, transit lines, water and wastewater systems, and large buildings. They model loads, evaluate soils and hydrology, prepare drawings and specifications, secure permits, and inspect construction.
Training path
Most US civil engineers hold a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam to become an Engineer in Training. After four years of experience, they take the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam for full PE licensure.
Specializations
Specializations include structural, geotechnical, transportation, water resources, environmental, construction, and coastal engineering. Many civil engineers also lead multidisciplinary teams on master planning and resilience projects.
