A certified operator who lifts and places heavy loads using mobile and tower cranes on construction and industrial sites.

What crane operators do

Most US crane operators complete a three- to four-year operating engineer apprenticeship and pass National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators exams covering specific crane types. State licensing applies in several states.

Settings

Crane operators work for general contractors on high-rise and industrial projects, container terminals at seaports, shipyards, refineries during turnarounds, and crane rental companies that supply operators and equipment to clients.
