PROFESSIONS

Truck Driver

Filter:

A licensed driver who operates large trucks to transport goods over short and long distances.

What truck drivers do

Truck drivers haul freight in tractor-trailers, tankers, flatbeds, and refrigerated trailers between shippers, distribution centers, and customers. They inspect their rigs, log hours, manage paperwork, secure loads, and navigate weather and traffic.

Training path

US truck drivers must hold a commercial driver license issued by their state and earned through a written and skills test, typically after a three- to seven-week training program. Endorsements cover hazardous materials, tankers, doubles or triples, and passenger transport.

Settings

Drivers work for long-haul over-the-road carriers, regional and local fleets, less-than-truckload operators, dedicated routes for big retailers, owner-operated companies, and specialized hazmat and oversize haulers.
