What diesel mechanics do
Diesel mechanics diagnose engine and drivetrain problems, replace injectors, turbochargers, and emission components, repair transmissions and hydraulics, and service brakes and electrical systems on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
Training path
Most US diesel mechanics complete a six-month to two-year technical school program or a three- to four-year apprenticeship. ASE Medium-Heavy Truck certifications validate skills. Many manufacturers run brand-specific training for technicians at dealerships.
