An engineer who bridges software development and operations, automating build, deploy, and infrastructure workflows.
What DevOps engineers do
DevOps engineers automate build, test, and deploy pipelines, provision cloud infrastructure, manage container orchestration platforms, and improve observability so developers can ship safely and frequently. They reduce friction between coding and production.
Training path
Most US DevOps engineers hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science or IT, often after starting as system administrators, software engineers, or network engineers. Cloud certifications from AWS, Azure, or GCP support career progression.
Tooling
Common tools include Terraform, Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Prometheus, Grafana, and a variety of cloud platform services. Many DevOps teams also run secret managers and policy-as-code systems.
