Anesthesiologist

Filter:

A physician who administers anesthesia and manages patient physiology during surgery and other invasive procedures.

What anesthesiologists do

Anesthesiologists evaluate patients before surgery, choose appropriate anesthetic plans, induce and maintain anesthesia during procedures, and manage recovery. They monitor heart rate, blood pressure, oxygenation, and ventilation continuously, intervening immediately if physiology changes.

Training path

US training includes medical school followed by a one-year internship and a three-year anesthesiology residency. Fellowships in pain medicine, critical care, cardiac, pediatric, or obstetric anesthesia add one to two years.

Beyond the operating room

Anesthesiologists also direct pain medicine clinics, intensive care units, and obstetric anesthesia services. They lead resuscitation efforts and serve as perioperative consultants on complex cases.
