What pharmacists do
Pharmacists verify and dispense medications, check for drug interactions and allergies, counsel patients on dosing and side effects, and collaborate with prescribers to adjust therapy. Hospital pharmacists also participate in rounds, review patient charts, and prepare intravenous compounds.
Training path
Pharmacists in the US complete a Doctor of Pharmacy program, typically four years after two or more years of prerequisite undergraduate coursework. State licensure requires passing the NAPLEX and law examinations and meeting continuing education requirements.
Settings
Most pharmacists work in community and retail settings, but a substantial share work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, mail-order operations, managed care, academia, and the pharmaceutical industry.
