A doctor specialized in diagnosing and treating conditions of the foot, ankle, and lower extremity.
What podiatrists do
Podiatrists treat ingrown nails, bunions, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, sports injuries, fractures, and diabetic foot ulcers. They prescribe orthotics, perform office procedures, and operate on bony deformities and soft tissue conditions of the lower extremity.
Training path
US podiatrists complete a four-year Doctor of Podiatric Medicine program and a three-year hospital-based residency. State licensure follows board examinations. Fellowships in reconstructive surgery, sports medicine, or wound care add one year.
Scope of practice
Scope varies by state but generally includes surgery of the foot and ankle, prescribing medications, ordering imaging, and treating systemic disease as it affects the lower extremity.
