PROFESSIONS

Drywall Installer

Filter:

A tradesperson who hangs and finishes gypsum board on walls and ceilings of homes and commercial buildings.

What drywall installers do

Drywall installers, called hangers, fasten gypsum panels to studs and joists using screws. Tapers then apply joint compound and tape over seams, sand smooth, and apply finish textures. The trade prepares interior walls for painting and wallpaper.

Training path

Most US drywall workers learn on the job under experienced installers. Union apprenticeships through the Painters and Allied Trades or Carpenters last two to four years and include classroom instruction on materials, sound and fire-rated assemblies, and finishing.

Settings

Drywall installers work for general contractors on residential subdivisions, commercial tenant improvements, hospitals and schools, and high-end custom homes where smooth Level 5 finishes are specified.
