A skilled tradesperson who applies plaster, stucco, and decorative finishes to interior and exterior walls.
What plasterers do
Plasterers install metal or wood lath, apply scratch, brown, and finish coats of plaster, and trowel smooth or textured surfaces. They install exterior stucco systems, repair historic plaster ceilings, and create ornamental moldings and medallions.
Training path
Most US plasterers complete a three- to four-year apprenticeship combining paid work with classroom hours on materials, mixes, and historic methods. The Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons union runs nationally recognized training centers.
Specializations
Specializations include traditional three-coat lime plaster, gypsum veneer, EIFS exterior insulation systems, stucco, decorative cornice and ornament, and conservation of historic surfaces in public buildings and landmark homes.
