A tradesperson who applies paint, stain, and coatings to protect and decorate interiors and exteriors of buildings.
What painters do
Painters scrape, sand, patch, and prime surfaces, then apply paint, stain, varnish, or epoxy by brush, roller, or sprayer. They protect floors and furniture, mask trim, and select coatings appropriate for substrates, weather exposure, and use.
Training path
Many US painters learn on the job under experienced workers. Union apprenticeships through the Finishing Trades Institute run two to three years and cover surface preparation, application techniques, color theory, and hazardous coatings.
Specializations
Specializations include residential and commercial interior, exterior, industrial coatings, decorative finishes, faux painting, automotive refinishing, and bridge or tank coatings using protective epoxies and zinc primers.
