Mason

Filter:

A skilled tradesperson who lays bricks, concrete blocks, and stone to build walls, floors, and structures.

What masons do

Masons cut and lay bricks, concrete blocks, and natural stone with mortar to form load-bearing walls, veneers, fireplaces, chimneys, paving, and decorative features. They mix and apply mortar, install reinforcement, and ensure courses are level, plumb, and aligned.

Training path

Most US masons complete a three- to four-year apprenticeship combining paid work with classroom hours on blueprint reading, mathematics, materials, and safety. Vocational schools and on-the-job learning under experienced masons are alternative routes.

Specializations

Specialties include brick, block, stone, refractory work on industrial furnaces, terrazzo and mosaic installation, and restoration of historic masonry. Many masons run their own contracting businesses.
