A beauty professional who applies makeup for fashion, film, theater, weddings, and special events.
What makeup artists do
Makeup artists apply beauty, bridal, theatrical, and special effects makeup. They prep skin, contour and highlight, apply foundation and color, set with powder, and adjust for film or stage lighting. Many also do hair styling and head curated lookbooks.
Training path
US makeup artists train through makeup schools, apprenticeships, or by entering cosmetology programs that include makeup. Film and television artists join the IATSE Local 706 Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild and progress through assistant roles.
Settings
Makeup artists work freelance at weddings and events, in salons and retail counters, on photo shoots, fashion shows, film and TV productions, theater, opera, and music video sets. Many build social media followings to drive direct bookings.
